I have debated this in the past. It feels like a recurring debate in my mind. I have considered porting all my blog work from Blogger to Wordpress. From a usage stand point I have liked Blogger for its ease of use. It has served me well over the years for my beer blog. At the same time, I realize that there is quite a bit of usability with Wordpress that I don't have with Blogger.
Looking through the Wordpress site I run across quite a bit that remains unfamiliar to me. Granted anything is learnable. In fact I picked up Wordpress for Dummies from the library to see if I can figure it out a bit. Though I am still not sure I want to spend my time trying to figure this out when I can be doing other things.
So I will now post it to you, the readers, what are your thoughts on the different platforms? Which do you prefer and why? Is it worth my time to switch?
I moved from Blogger to Wordpress and have love the difference. I do understand the ease of using Blogger but you will find that you can quickly become Wordpress proficient. The best part for me is the flexibility and choices Wordpress offers. Just my thoughts. :-)
ReplyDeleteI started out on Blogger, but quickly gravitated toward a self-hosted WordPress platform. WordPress has so many plug-ins available, and the discussion help boards are great when issues arise. I found Blogger to be limiting when I looked at what I wanted to be able to accomplish with my website. Plus, it seems WordPress blogs rank better in search engines.
ReplyDeleteMost websites nowadays are built using WordPress. The options seem endless. I also like how it's open-source software. The switch provides a learning-curve, but in my opinion, it's well worth it.
When selling my skills, nobody will care if I have Blogger skills, but they will care if I can build and maintain a website using WordPress. It's the more professional and more powerful platform.
I am looking into it. I may just start with the beer blog there (that one I might actually host and pay for a name and all that). Playing around with stuff and seeing if I like it or not.
ReplyDeleteJon, you didn't differentiate between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress. If you are ready for your own site, with your own domain ... self-hosted WordPress rocks. You are a smart guy - you can teach yourself how to get it going. You could start with the 2012 theme if you want to go easy at first. It's a great theme.
ReplyDeleteI have been looking at self-hosted. That is an eventual move. Currently its a matter of figuring stuff out and seeing how I want to set up. With two blogs to consider, the move is a bit more than a skip and a jump (or maybe its even easier than I am thinking).
DeleteI am not a great deal of help as I have never used blogger. I started on wordpress and have continued with it. I also had a bit of a tutorial so it didn't take too long to get up to speed. Sorry, no help :)
ReplyDeleteLeora is absolutely right. You should move to selfhosted Wordpress and have your own domain. It's not difficult. Besides Leora could answer the most complicated technical question you have.
ReplyDeleteGo for it Jon. Move to selfhosted Wordpress.
I started off with Wordpress because more people recommended it. I have found it pretty easy to work with.
ReplyDeleteI have never used blogger, but I use Wordpress for my internship and it is super easy to use and navigate.
